"This video is private" — what it means and what you can do

A private video is one the uploader has set to require explicit invitation. Even with the URL, only accounts the uploader has invited can view it. Unlike unlisted videos (which work with the URL), private videos are gated.

Why this happens

  • The uploader set the visibility to "Private" intentionally.
  • A previously unlisted or public video was changed to private.
  • The video was uploaded as private and the uploader hasn't shared it with you.

How to fix it

  1. 1

Ask the uploader to share access

YouTube's share-with-individuals system lets the uploader add up to 50 specific Google accounts to the access list. They send the invite from the video's sharing settings.

  2. 2

Check if the same video is mirrored elsewhere

Many private uploads are early cuts or working drafts; the public version often appears later with a different URL.

  3. 3

Verify you're signed into the right Google account

If you have multiple accounts and were invited on a different one, switching accounts in YouTube's top-right menu can lift the block.

Frequently asked

Can I download a private YouTube video?
Only if you have explicit access via the uploader's invite. Without that, no downloader can serve the file — YouTube's servers refuse to release the bytes.
Does private = same as unlisted?
No. Unlisted videos play with anyone who has the URL. Private videos require the uploader to add specific Google accounts to an invite list.
