When YouTube won’t play.

"Video unavailable" is YouTube's catch-all error for videos that the platform won't serve to your account or region. It does not always mean the video is deleted — most of the time the content still exists, just not for you.

YouTube is blocking the video based on your IP address's country. The content is still licensed and playing for users in other countries; you just aren't one of them.

A region-blocked video is one where YouTube refuses to serve playback to your country based on the rights holder's licensing. The video still exists and is not deleted; it's just unavailable to you specifically.

YouTube's player failed to start. This is the most generic error YouTube shows — it can mean a CDN issue, a player JavaScript bug, an extension conflict, or a network problem. Almost every fix is worth trying because YouTube doesn't tell you which one.

The video repeatedly stops to load more data, even though your connection should be fast enough for the chosen quality. The cause is rarely a single thing — it's usually one of bandwidth, browser cache, hardware acceleration, or a DNS / CDN routing issue.

The familiar 5-second-skip-ads-button doesn't appear, the ads run to completion, or you see "skippable in 5 seconds" but the counter never moves. YouTube has been progressively making non-skippable ads more common, and some browser configurations make even skippable ones feel un-skippable.

YouTube ad load has visibly increased through 2025 and 2026 — more pre-roll ads, more non-skippable formats, more mid-roll insertions in long videos, more "double pre-roll" stacking. The shift is real and accelerating.

YouTube Music pauses mid-song repeatedly — when the phone screen turns off, when you switch apps, when a notification arrives. The audio that should keep playing in the background dies. Mostly a mobile-app behavior; desktop is usually fine.

A private video is one the uploader has set to require explicit invitation. Even with the URL, only accounts the uploader has invited can view it. Unlike unlisted videos (which work with the URL), private videos are gated.

YouTube has flagged the video as containing content (violence, language, mature themes) that requires the viewer to be 18+ and signed in with an account that has confirmed age.

YouTube's anti-bot system flagged your IP as suspicious. The most common cause is a downloader or scraper running from a datacenter IP — but normal users on shared CGNAT or VPN connections sometimes trigger it too.

The video was removed by the uploader or by YouTube's moderation team. Unlike "Video unavailable" (which can mean region-block), this error specifically means deletion.

YouTube paused a video that was playing, usually after a network blip or a tab switch. On mobile, the "are you still watching?" prompt counts as this error too. Different from "video unavailable" — playback worked, then stopped.

Windows-specific YouTube error where the audio output device disconnects or changes mid-playback. The system message says to restart, but most cases are fixable in 30 seconds without rebooting.

The video plays but the comments section is stuck on "Loading comments…" or shows an empty box. Different from comments being disabled (which shows an explicit message) — the request is failing silently.

Shorts-specific playback issues — the vertical short doesn't start, gets stuck on the first frame, has no audio, or won't advance to the next short on swipe. Different code path from regular videos, different set of failure modes.

Video plays but audio is silent. The pause/play button works, the playhead advances, but you hear nothing. Different from "audio renderer error" (which throws a popup) — this is silent failure, which means the issue is somewhere in the volume chain rather than the audio pipeline crashing.

A YouTube live stream loads but won't play smoothly — freezes every few seconds, lags 30s+ behind the live edge, shows "live stream offline" briefly before the player gives up. Different code path from regular videos so different fix set.

You click the fullscreen button or hit F and nothing happens — the video stays in its embedded box. Different from playback errors; the video is working, the chrome (player UI) isn't.

The mobile YouTube app force-closes when you open it, when you start a video, or randomly during playback. Specific to the native iOS / Android apps — does not apply to YouTube in mobile browsers.

The page loads but the video player shows a permanent loading spinner. Different from buffering (which makes progress then stops) — stuck loading means the player never starts.

You click the CC button but no captions appear, or the captions toggle is grayed out, or the language list is empty. Different from "captions disabled by uploader" (which shows an explicit message) — this is the toggle silently not working.

PiP mode (the floating-video-while-you-do-other-things feature) refuses to activate. You click the PiP button or use the keyboard shortcut and nothing happens. Browser-specific behavior since each browser implements PiP slightly differently.

The cast icon in the YouTube player doesn't appear, or it appears but tapping it does nothing, or it casts but the video freezes on the TV. Different failure surfaces, mostly all traced to network or device-discovery issues.

Captions appear noticeably before or after the speech. Sometimes 1–2 seconds early, sometimes seconds late. Different from "captions wrong" (which is a transcription issue) — the captions are correct text, just appearing at the wrong time.

The quality selector keeps reverting to 360p (or 480p) even though your connection should handle 1080p. Different from "no HD available" (which means the source doesn't have it) — this is YouTube's adaptive bitrate underestimating your bandwidth.

The video plays but the chat panel on the right shows a spinner forever, or "chat is disabled" when it isn't, or only shows a few seconds of messages before stopping. Distinct from "live stream not playing" — playback works, just the chat layer is broken.

You're signed into multiple Google accounts and YouTube keeps using the wrong one — showing the wrong subscriptions, recommending content for a different profile, sending notifications to the wrong inbox. The active account flip is unstable.

You enabled captions on the TV YouTube app but they don't appear. Or they show on phone but not TV. Or they show for some videos but not others. Smart TV captions have their own pipeline that's distinct from the desktop / mobile flow.

Your YouTube homepage shows irrelevant content, content you've already watched, or content from a topic you watched once and don't care about anymore. The recommendation algorithm got stuck on a pattern and won't move on.

You subscribed and clicked the bell for "all notifications" on a channel — but new uploads don't notify you. Or notifications stopped working entirely. Or you only get some, not all. Notification delivery is the most fragile signal layer in YouTube.

YouTube on iPhone misbehaves — app crashes, videos won't play, captions don't show, PiP refuses to engage. iOS has its own quirks distinct from Android, often around app integration with iOS-level features.

YouTube on smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Sony Bravia, TCL, Hisense, Roku, Fire TV) misbehaves — crashes, stuck on loading, signed out repeatedly, slow to start. Smart TV YouTube apps update less frequently than mobile / web and have a longer tail of unfixed bugs.

YouTube signs you out repeatedly and asks for your password again — sometimes daily, sometimes every few hours. Different from a one-off sign-out: this is persistent re-authentication that interrupts normal use.

YouTube works on Wi-Fi but fails on mobile data — slow loading, buffering at the lowest quality, "video unavailable" errors that disappear on Wi-Fi. Cellular-specific failure.

A YouTube video plays at much lower volume than other apps. You crank the system volume to maximum and it's still quiet. The audio is there, it's just inexplicably below the level of every other audio source.

YouTube's adaptive bitrate keeps switching down from 1080p to 720p (or worse) during playback even when your connection is fast. The picture goes from sharp to blurry repeatedly throughout the video.

The skip ad button appears but is greyed out, won't accept clicks, or shows "0 seconds left" indefinitely without becoming active. Different from "no skip button at all" (which means non-skippable ad).

In the Shorts feed (the swipe-up-for-next-video flow), swiping or scrolling doesn't advance to the next short. Or it advances but the new video doesn't start playing. The vertical Shorts UX is broken.

YouTube's mobile experience is dramatically worse on cellular than on Wi-Fi. Videos take 10+ seconds to start, quality is locked at 480p, audio cuts out. Wi-Fi at the same speed test number works fine.

You try to screen-record a YouTube video (using iOS Screen Recording, macOS QuickTime, OBS, etc.) and the resulting recording shows a black box where the video should be. Audio captures fine; video is blocked.

You opened a Short and now Shorts keep playing one after another in an infinite feed even when you swipe away or close the player. The Shorts engagement loop is hard to escape on YouTube's UX.

The video page loads but playback fails — the player shows a spinner forever, the video plays without audio, or playback stutters. Different from "Video unavailable" (the file is denied) — this is a delivery problem.

The uploader deleted the video themselves. This is different from a copyright takedown or YouTube moderation removal — the channel owner intentionally chose to take it down.

You type a search query into YouTube and the results page is empty, shows a spinner forever, or returns "no results found" for queries that obviously have results. Different from filtered-by-account-history bias (which still returns something).

You watch a video, navigate away, and the history page shows nothing. Or the "Continue watching" carousel is empty even though you've clearly watched videos. The history-recording pipeline has stopped on your account.

A video plays in the wrong orientation — sideways (90° off), upside-down, or mirrored. Different from genuinely vertical Shorts content. The video file has orientation metadata that's being interpreted wrongly somewhere in the pipeline.

Dark mode is enabled in YouTube settings but the page still shows light theme, or dark mode partially works (sidebar dark, main content light), or the toggle silently fails.

YouTube plays poorly or not at all on a Chromebook — choppy video, audio glitches, the player crashes, hardware acceleration breaks. Distinct issues from Windows / Mac because ChromeOS's video stack differs.

The familiar YouTube keyboard shortcuts — J/L for 10s seek, K for pause, F for fullscreen, M for mute, arrow keys for fine seek — silently stop responding. Different from "the player has issues" (where playback breaks); here playback works, the keyboard interactions don't.

The YouTube homepage / subscription feed / search results show video titles but thumbnails are blank, broken-image icons, or empty placeholders. The video metadata loads; the image CDN doesn't respond.

You enter your Google credentials but YouTube refuses to sign you in — redirect loops, "something went wrong", "this account isn't supported on this device", or the sign-in completes but you end up signed out again on the next page.

YouTube misbehaves specifically on Firefox while Chrome / Edge work fine on the same machine. Video stutters, captions break, search times out, the player refuses to enter PiP. Firefox's rendering engine and Google's integration assumptions don't always agree.

You try to leave a comment and it disappears, fails silently, or shows "your comment couldn't be submitted". The user-side comment flow fails — different from "comments disabled for this video" (which is by the uploader).

You click "Add to Watch Later" and nothing happens — the icon doesn't fill in, the video doesn't appear in your Watch Later playlist, or the button gives a brief "success" animation but the playlist stays empty.

Restricted Mode is filtering content but the toggle to turn it off is grayed out, missing, or keeps re-enabling. Different from "I want Restricted Mode" — the user wants it off and YouTube isn't letting them.

You have subscriptions but the Subscriptions tab is empty, or shows fewer videos than expected, or stops loading partway. The feed of new uploads from your subscribed channels isn't working as expected.

Your YouTube channel (or full Google account) was suspended. You see "this account has been terminated" or your videos are gone. Different from "video removed" (which is per-video) — this is account-level.

You hear the audio playing but the video area is black or frozen. The player shows progress, you can hear timestamps tick, but the visual is gone or stuck on one frame.

The bottom progress bar with play/pause/timeline/volume/quality controls is missing. The video plays but you can't scrub, see the time, or change quality. Different from "hide controls embed" (which is intentional) — this is the regular player UI vanishing.

The video is playing in the small mini-player at the bottom-right of the page but you can't get back to the full-size view. Clicking the expand icon does nothing. Or the mini-player won't close even when you're done.

You click the browser's back button after watching a video, expecting to return to the page you came from, but YouTube cycles you between several recent video pages or refuses to leave YouTube at all.

A video that should play once keeps restarting from the beginning when it ends. Or scrubbing forward jumps you back to 0:00 unexpectedly. Different from "Loop" mode (which is intentional) — this is unintended re-restart.

You click the pause button and the video keeps playing. Or pressing K (the keyboard shortcut for pause) does nothing. The player UI looks normal but doesn't respond to pause commands.

After a video ends, YouTube shows a grid of recommended videos and creator branding overlaying the end of the player. Normally this clears when you click anywhere. Sometimes it gets stuck and you can't dismiss it.

You click the thumbs-up or thumbs-down button but nothing happens. The icon doesn't fill in, the like count doesn't change, or you see "couldn't rate this video" briefly.

You click "Clip" in the video's share menu to create a shareable short clip, but the clip dialog won't open, won't save, or saves but the resulting clip URL is broken.

You're the channel owner and want to pin a comment on your own video. The "Pin" option in the comment's three-dot menu doesn't appear, or it appears but doesn't persist after page reload.

The player shows a blue (or grey) box with a sad-face icon and an error code (like 150, 410, 429). Different from black-screen-but-audio — the player itself crashed, not the decoder.

The right sidebar (or below-video panel on mobile) where YouTube usually shows "Up next" and related videos is empty. The current video plays fine; the recommendations are missing.

A live recording (live stream that's still ongoing or just finished) won't play. The recording is showing as available but you get an error when starting. Distinct from "live stream not playing" — this is specifically the post-broadcast archival flow.

You shared a link with timestamp using YouTube's "Start at" share option, but when someone clicks it the video starts from the beginning, or jumps to a different time than expected.

You navigate to a creator's channel page but it shows blank, partially loaded, or stuck on a loading skeleton. Different from "video not playing" — this is the channel listing itself failing to render.

You're searching for a video you watched years ago. Search returns recent content matching your query but the old video you want doesn't appear. The algorithm prioritizes recency aggressively.

You search YouTube but typed-ahead suggestions don't show your past searches. Or you remember searching for something specific yesterday and can't find it in any history view.

You add a video to a playlist (or create a new playlist) but it doesn't persist. The "Saved" notification shows but the playlist remains empty next time you check.

A comment has 50+ replies but clicking "View replies" doesn't load them. Or the replies show partially and the "Show more" button doesn't work. The comment thread is half-broken.

Other devices show 1080p as available for this video, but on your current device the quality menu tops out at 720p (or lower). The format YouTube offers depends on browser / device / account, not just the video.

A YouTube thumbnail is showing up blurry / pixelated in your search results or homepage. The high-resolution version exists but YouTube is serving the smaller variant for some reason.

You tap the YouTube app icon and nothing happens. Or the app starts to launch, the splash screen flashes, then it crashes back to home before the main UI appears. Differs from "app keeps crashing during playback" — this is launch-time failure.

You're paying for YouTube Premium but the account behaves as free — ads play, no background play, no offline downloads. The subscription is active on your bill but the YouTube app doesn't recognize it.

You tap the cast icon expecting to see your Chromecast / smart TV / Google Home device in the list, but it's empty. Different from "cast fails" — the receivers aren't even appearing as targets.

Your YouTube homepage suggests random content unrelated to what you actually watch. Different from "recommendations are bad" (which is post-derailment) — here the personalization never engaged at all.

The YouTube page refreshes itself every few seconds without your input. Or you navigate to a video and within moments the page reloads, losing your scroll position. Distinct from a one-off reload — this is repeated involuntary refresh.

You try to scrub backward in a video — drag the progress bar to an earlier point — and the video either ignores you or jumps forward instead. Different from "seek forward not working" — specifically backward navigation fails.

You enable Loop via right-click → Loop, but the video ends and stops instead of restarting. Or it restarts once but then stops the second time. The loop feature isn't persisting.

You're a Premium subscriber and the download icon should be available for offline saves. But the download button is missing, greyed out, or downloads start and immediately fail. The official offline-download flow that Premium gives you isn't working.
