YouTube autoplay not working — turn it back on (or finally off)

Videos finish but the next video doesn't auto-start, or autoplay is on and you can't turn it off. The autoplay toggle in the player is small, browsers have their own autoplay policies on top, and the result is two separate layers fighting each other.

Why this happens

  • Player's autoplay toggle is off (small switch next to the player controls).
  • Browser autoplay policy is set to "block all" — overrides YouTube.
  • Tab is muted, browser blocks autoplay of unmuted videos.
  • YouTube's anti-engagement-loop disables autoplay after long sessions.
  • Extension (focus / distraction-blocker) auto-pausing every video.

How to fix it

  1. 1

Check the autoplay toggle next to the player

A small toggle, easy to miss, sits next to the video title or in the player controls. Make sure it's on (most browsers default it on).

  2. 2

    Allow autoplay in browser settings

Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Site Settings → Additional content settings → "Sound" → check that youtube.com is allowed to autoplay. Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions → Autoplay → set youtube.com to "Allow Audio and Video".

  3. 3

    Unmute the tab

Most browsers refuse to autoplay a video that would produce sound from a muted tab. Right-click tab → uncheck Mute tab.

  4. 4

    Disable focus extensions

Cold Turkey, StayFocusd, and similar tools auto-pause videos. Whitelist youtube.com or pause them.

Frequently asked

How do I disable YouTube autoplay permanently?
Turn off the autoplay toggle in the player — it persists per device. Some users also block YouTube autoplay site-wide via browser settings (Chrome: Site Settings → Sound → Block for youtube.com prevents sound-based autoplay).
