YouTube quality picker missing 1080p — fix the format list
Other devices show 1080p as available for this video, but on your current device the quality menu tops out at 720p (or lower). The format YouTube offers depends on browser / device / account, not just the video.
Why this happens
- Browser doesn't support the codec required for 1080p (VP9 on very old browsers, AV1 on older non-AV1-capable hardware).
- PoToken is missing (server-side or anonymous sessions get capped at lower quality).
- Mobile data saver / "Save data" YouTube setting capping quality.
- Account is "Made for Kids" or otherwise restricted.
- Specific 1080p variant isn't supported by the device (e.g., 1080p HDR but device is SDR-only).
How to fix it
- 1
Check the codec support of your browser
Visit youtube.com/html5 — shows which codecs your browser supports. If VP9 / AV1 / Opus aren't listed, update your browser.
- 2
Disable YouTube's "Save data" toggle
YouTube account → Settings → Playback and performance → Video quality preferences → ensure "Higher picture quality" (not "Save data") is selected for both Wi-Fi and mobile.
- 3
Sign in if signed out
Some videos serve only lower quality to anonymous viewers. Signing in often unlocks the full quality menu.
- 4
Try a different browser
If Safari shows 720p max and Chrome shows 1080p, Safari's codec support is the limitation. Switch browsers for the higher-quality download.
