Video region-blocked: how to play and download geo-restricted YouTube videos

A region-blocked video is one where YouTube refuses to serve playback to your country based on the rights holder's licensing. The video still exists and is not deleted; it's just unavailable to you specifically.

Why this happens

  • Music videos under regional licensing (most common — the bulk of Vevo content).
  • Sports broadcasts (NBA, Premier League) restricted to broadcast partner countries.
  • TV-show clips uploaded by networks with country-specific distribution.
  • News content under country-of-origin restrictions.

How to fix it

  1. 1

Use a VPN to a country where the content is licensed

Music: the U.S. has the broadest catalog. Sports: the country whose league owns the rights. News: usually the broadcaster's home country.

  2. 2

Use a residential or mobile proxy if a VPN doesn't work

YouTube sometimes detects VPN IPs and blocks them too. Residential proxy services rotate through home-internet IPs that aren't flagged.

  3. 3

    Use a downloader that handles geo-blocks server-side

Some download tools (VidPickr included) detect geo-blocks and switch to a permitted-region fetch automatically.

If you just want the video saved

VidPickr's default region is in the EU; for content blocked from there, we automatically re-route to the U.S. or UK to save the file. From your side it just works — no VPN setup, no manual region picking.

Frequently asked

Why are music videos region-blocked more than other content?
Music labels license videos country-by-country. A song deal that includes the U.S., UK, and Canada doesn't automatically include Brazil or India — separate negotiations, separate fees. Labels block the video in unlicensed countries to stay compliant.
