YouTube app keeps crashing on Android / iPhone

The mobile YouTube app force-closes when you open it, when you start a video, or randomly during playback. Specific to the native iOS / Android apps — does not apply to YouTube in mobile browsers.

Why this happens

  • App version is too old (YouTube ages out support for older builds).
  • OS version is below YouTube's minimum supported (Android 8+ / iOS 16+ as of 2026).
  • Local app data / cache is corrupted.
  • Device is running out of RAM (cheap phones, lots of apps open).
  • Account-level sync is failing — corrupted "watch later" or playlist entry.

How to fix it

  1. 1

    Update the YouTube app

Play Store / App Store → search YouTube → Update. Most "app keeps crashing" reports come from versions 3+ months old; YouTube ages out support quickly.

  2. 2

    Force-stop and clear cache (Android)

Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage → Clear Cache. Then re-open. Don't click Clear Data unless step 4 doesn't work — Clear Data signs you out.

  3. 3

    Offload + reinstall (iOS)

Settings → General → iPhone Storage → YouTube → Offload App. Then reinstall from App Store. Account state is preserved; cache resets.

  4. 4

    Reboot the phone

Resolves transient RAM issues and clears any stuck system services that were keeping bad app state in memory.

  5. 5

Use the browser as a workaround

Open m.youtube.com in Safari / Chrome — the web player runs in a separate process from the app and isn't affected by app-side crashes.

Frequently asked

Why does YouTube force-close even after I just installed it?
Usually an OS-side issue — the app requires a minimum OS version (Android 8+ / iOS 16+ in 2026) and quietly crashes when launched on older systems. The Play Store / App Store don't always block install for unsupported OS.
