YouTube live recording not loading — fix the in-progress stream

A live recording (live stream that's still ongoing or just finished) won't play. The recording is showing as available but you get an error when starting. Distinct from "live stream not playing" — this is specifically the post-broadcast archival flow.

Why this happens

  • Live stream just finished — YouTube needs ~5-30 minutes to finalize the recording.
  • Recording is being trimmed or processed by the creator.
  • Creator disabled "save broadcast" so the live ended without a recording.
  • CDN hasn't fully indexed the new recording yet.

How to fix it

  1. 1

Wait 30 minutes if the stream just ended

YouTube processes the live broadcast into a permanent recording. During processing the URL exists but playback fails. Coming back later almost always works.

  2. 2

    Reload after a short wait

If processing finishes in 5-10 minutes you don't need to wait 30. Reload every few minutes to check.

  3. 3

Check the channel for the saved version

Some creators upload an edited version of the live as a regular video shortly after the broadcast. That's often the one to watch — better cuts, no dead air.

  4. 4

Accept that some lives don't save

Creators can disable broadcast-saving. If the URL becomes permanently 404, the stream wasn't saved.
