YouTube progress bar won't go backward — fix the seek-back

You try to scrub backward in a video — drag the progress bar to an earlier point — and the video either ignores you or jumps forward instead. Different from "seek forward not working" — specifically backward navigation fails.

Why this happens

  • Live stream with a short DVR window — backward scrubbing past the available history isn't possible.
  • Ad is playing — most ads disable scrubbing entirely.
  • YouTube's player UI is stuck — the visual scrub doesn't reach the seek logic.
  • Browser extension intercepting seek events.

How to fix it

  1. 1

Wait for any ad to finish

Ads disable scrubbing. Once the ad ends, scrubbing returns to normal.

  2. 2

Use the J key to seek back 10 seconds

Keyboard shortcut is sometimes more reliable than dragging the progress bar. J = back 10s, L = forward 10s.

  3. 3

    Refresh the page

    Stuck player state resets.

  4. 4

Check if it's a live stream

Live streams have a DVR buffer (usually 2-4 hours) but scrubbing past the start of the broadcast obviously isn't possible.

Frequently asked

How far back can I scrub in a YouTube live stream?
Depends on the broadcaster — typically 2-4 hours of DVR buffer. Most channels keep the buffer modest to control bandwidth costs.
