YouTube comment replies won't expand — fix the reply thread
A comment has 50+ replies but clicking "View replies" doesn't load them. Or the replies show partially and the "Show more" button doesn't work. The comment thread is half-broken.
Why this happens
- Browser extension blocking the reply API endpoint.
- You're signed out and the comment thread requires sign-in to view all replies.
- Many replies have been moderated or held — the visible count differs from what's loadable.
- YouTube's thread service had a brief outage.
- Stuck UI state after a network blip during partial load.
How to fix it
- 1
Reload the page
Fresh fetch of the comment thread. Fixes most stuck-expand bugs.
- 2
Disable comment-filtering extensions
Some "Hide YouTube comments" or "comment filter" extensions intercept the reply API. Test in incognito.
- 3
Sign in
Anonymous viewers sometimes see truncated reply threads. Signing in unlocks the full thread.
- 4
Try the mobile app
The mobile YouTube app uses a different reply-fetching code path. If desktop is stuck, mobile usually works.
Frequently asked
Why does the reply count differ from the loaded replies?
YouTube counts moderated, held-for-review, and shadowbanned replies in the total but doesn't show them. The visible thread is the public subset; the count includes the full set.
