YouTube dark mode not working — fix the theme toggle
Dark mode is enabled in YouTube settings but the page still shows light theme, or dark mode partially works (sidebar dark, main content light), or the toggle silently fails.
Why this happens
- OS-level theme preference (auto/light/dark) overrides per-site choice.
- Cached CSS from before the dark mode update.
- Browser extension forcing light mode (some "reading mode" / accessibility tools).
- Account state stuck after a recent sign-in change.
- YouTube A/B test is keeping you in an experimental light-mode variant.
How to fix it
- 1
Set the appearance to "Dark theme" explicitly
Profile icon → Appearance → "Dark theme" (not "Use device theme"). "Use device theme" follows your OS — which on Windows/macOS often switches based on time of day.
- 2
Hard reload
Cmd+Shift+R or Ctrl+F5. Stale CSS is a common cause when YouTube ships a theme update.
- 3
Disable theme-related extensions
Dark Reader, Stylus, and similar tools sometimes fight with YouTube's native dark mode. Disable them in incognito and check if the native dark mode works.
- 4
Sign out + sign back in
Resets stuck account-level appearance preferences.
Frequently asked
Does dark mode save battery?
On OLED screens (iPhone, recent Samsung, some Android), yes — black pixels are literally off, so dark mode draws less power. On LCD screens (most laptops, most TVs), no meaningful difference.
