YouTube history not saving — fix the "watch history" pipeline

You watch a video, navigate away, and the history page shows nothing. Or the "Continue watching" carousel is empty even though you've clearly watched videos. The history-recording pipeline has stopped on your account.

Why this happens

  • YouTube account setting "Watch history" is paused.
  • You're browsing in incognito mode (history is never saved in incognito).
  • Restricted Mode or kid-account setting suppresses history.
  • Account is signed out / signed in to a different account than you think.
  • Browser cookies were cleared and the session reset.

How to fix it

  1. 1

    Check Watch History settings

youtube.com/feed/history → Pause/Resume Watch History → confirm it shows "ON". The button toggles all history recording for the account.

  2. 2

    Verify the active Google account

Click your profile icon top-right. Make sure the account you expect is the active one — multi-account sessions silently switch occasionally.

  3. 3

    Check if you're in incognito

Incognito windows don't save history. The window's top-left shows an incognito icon if you are.

  4. 4

    Disable Restricted Mode

Bottom of any YouTube page → Restricted Mode: Off. With it on, certain content doesn't enter history.

  5. 5

Sign out + sign back in

A corrupted session can cause history writes to silently fail. Full sign-out and sign-in resets the session state.

Frequently asked

Does YouTube have a way to recover deleted history?
No. Once a video is deleted from your history (or your history is cleared), there's no recovery. Google Takeout exports current history but doesn't archive past states.
