YouTube Music keeps pausing — fix the background-play killer
YouTube Music pauses mid-song repeatedly — when the phone screen turns off, when you switch apps, when a notification arrives. The audio that should keep playing in the background dies. Mostly a mobile-app behavior; desktop is usually fine.
Why this happens
- Background play is disabled (free tier limits background play to Premium subscribers).
- Battery optimization is killing the YouTube Music process when backgrounded.
- Bluetooth audio session conflicts (another app grabbed the output).
- Data saver is throttling streaming bandwidth below playback bitrate.
- Account is signed into the free YouTube app instead of YouTube Music (free YT app has no background play).
How to fix it
- 1
Use YouTube Music app, not YouTube app
The regular YouTube app has no background play on free tier. YouTube Music app has free background play for music content. Make sure you have the right app installed.
- 2
Disable battery optimization for YouTube Music
Android: Settings → Apps → YouTube Music → Battery → Unrestricted. iOS: Settings → General → Background App Refresh → YouTube Music → On. Both prevent the OS from killing the background audio process.
- 3
Subscribe to Premium (YouTube Music plan)
The cheapest fix that's fully supported. ~$10/mo individual. Removes ads + enables full background play on the standard YouTube app too.
- 4
Disconnect / reconnect Bluetooth
If pauses correlate with notifications or other audio events, the Bluetooth audio session is being grabbed. Restart Bluetooth or disconnect/reconnect the headphones.
- 5
Download tracks for offline play
Offline-downloaded tracks (YouTube Music Premium offline, or files saved via VidPickr) play from local storage with no streaming-related pauses.
If you just want the video saved
For sustained background audio without Premium, download the tracks once as m4a (lossless YouTube AAC). Local audio in any music player plays uninterrupted regardless of YouTube's background-play policies.
