YouTube not loading on mobile data — fix the cellular-only failure

YouTube works on Wi-Fi but fails on mobile data — slow loading, buffering at the lowest quality, "video unavailable" errors that disappear on Wi-Fi. Cellular-specific failure.

Why this happens

  • Mobile carrier is throttling YouTube traffic (most US prepaid plans cap video at 480p or below).
  • Cellular DNS is broken for googlevideo.com.
  • Low Power Mode / Data Saver is on, restricting background fetches.
  • You have YouTube's "Data saver" enabled in account settings.
  • Roaming / international SIM with bad routes to YouTube CDN.

How to fix it

  1. 1

    Test your actual carrier speed

Open speedtest.net on cellular. If your speed is fine for general use but YouTube stutters, the carrier is specifically throttling video. Common on T-Mobile prepaid, Boost, Cricket, Visible, etc.

  2. 2

Disable Data Saver / Low Power Mode

iOS: Settings → Cellular → Data Saver → off. Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode → off. Android: Settings → Network → Data Saver → off. Each reduces video quality automatically when active.

  3. 3

    Disable YouTube's Data Saver

YouTube app: profile → Settings → Data saving → "Data saver mode" → off. Browser: youtube.com/account → playback → "Save data" preference → off.

  4. 4

    Switch DNS

Use Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 mobile app or change DNS in iOS/Android network settings. Some carrier DNS routes return slow YouTube CDN edges.

  5. 5

Download on Wi-Fi for cellular playback

If your carrier throttles video, download videos on Wi-Fi to your device, then play offline on cellular without streaming.

Frequently asked

Why does my carrier throttle YouTube specifically?
Many US carriers (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T) cap video streaming at lower quality on lower-tier plans, marketed as "smartphone optimization". Higher-tier plans don't throttle. This is plan-side throttling, not anti-YouTube specifically.
