YouTube Picture-in-Picture closing immediately — fix the floating window
You activate PiP and the floating window appears for a moment, then immediately closes. Different from "PiP not working" (where it doesn't open at all) — here it opens but doesn't persist.
Why this happens
- Mobile: switching apps invalidates the PiP window because the source app moved to background.
- Browser tab where the PiP was started was closed.
- Browser refresh dropped the PiP context.
- OS-level PiP permission was revoked between activations.
- Player paused — most PiP implementations auto-close when video stops playing.
How to fix it
- 1
Keep the source tab open
On desktop, closing the tab where you started PiP closes the PiP window. Just minimize the tab or switch tabs — don't close it.
- 2
Play the video, then activate PiP
PiP often refuses to open or stay open if the video is paused. Start playback first, then activate PiP.
- 3
Use the browser-level PiP, not the page-level
Right-click the video twice (first right-click shows YouTube's menu; second shows the browser's native menu with "Picture in Picture"). Browser-level PiP is more stable than YouTube's page-level button.
- 4
Disable extensions that hook media events
Volume control extensions, "Open in PiP on tab switch" extensions, and similar tools can break PiP unintentionally. Disable in incognito and re-test.
- 5
iOS: ensure Background App Refresh is on
Settings → General → Background App Refresh → Safari/YouTube → On. Required for PiP to survive when you leave the YouTube app.
