YouTube search not working — type queries, get nothing back

You type a search query into YouTube and the results page is empty, shows a spinner forever, or returns "no results found" for queries that obviously have results. Different from filtered-by-account-history bias (which still returns something).

Why this happens

  • Browser cache holds a stale search service worker.
  • Ad blocker over-blocked the search suggestions/results API.
  • Account-level restrictions (Restricted Mode, age-confirmed-off) limiting what surfaces.
  • YouTube's search service had a brief outage in your region.
  • Browser extension hooking the search URL and breaking the redirect.

How to fix it

  1. 1

Try the same query in incognito with extensions disabled

If incognito works, an extension or your cache is the cause. Cmd+Shift+N opens incognito in most browsers.

  2. 2

    Hard reload (Cmd+Shift+R / Ctrl+F5)

Bypasses the service worker that may have cached a broken state.

  3. 3

    Disable Restricted Mode

Bottom of any YouTube page → "Restricted Mode: On/Off". If on, the search results are filtered aggressively.

  4. 4

    Sign out and try again

Account-level search history corruption can cause this. Signed-out search uses a clean default state.

  5. 5

    Use Google site:youtube.com instead

When YouTube's search is broken, Google's site search of youtube.com gives the same coverage. "site:youtube.com [your query]" works around the YouTube-side bug.

Frequently asked

Why does YouTube search show no results for queries that obviously have results?
Almost always Restricted Mode, an account filter, or a stale cache. The actual search service rarely returns "no results" for popular queries — when it appears to, something between you and the result is filtering.
