YouTube Shorts won't stop playing — fix the infinite swipe loop
You opened a Short and now Shorts keep playing one after another in an infinite feed even when you swipe away or close the player. The Shorts engagement loop is hard to escape on YouTube's UX.
Why this happens
- This is the Shorts UX design — by intent, swiping is the only "stop" action.
- Auto-play is on across both regular videos and Shorts.
- Background tab continues to play.
- Mobile-specific: phone unlocked but app backgrounded keeps the Shorts queue alive.
How to fix it
- 1
Tap pause + close tab / app
Single tap on the Short pauses it. Then close the tab (browser) or swipe-up to close the app (mobile). Stops further auto-play.
- 2
Open the video in regular format
Every Short is also a regular video at youtube.com/watch?v=ID. Switching to the watch URL exits the Shorts auto-play feed entirely.
- 3
Disable Shorts in the YouTube app
iOS / Android: Settings → General → "Hide Shorts shelf" (only available on some app versions). Three-dot menu on any Shorts row → "Not interested" — gradually suppresses the shelf.
- 4
Use a YouTube interface extension
Extensions like "Hide YouTube Shorts" block the Shorts tab entirely on desktop. On mobile, third-party clients (NewPipe, FreeTube) have option to disable Shorts.
