YouTube Chromecast not working — fix the cast button
The cast icon in the YouTube player doesn't appear, or it appears but tapping it does nothing, or it casts but the video freezes on the TV. Different failure surfaces, mostly all traced to network or device-discovery issues.
Why this happens
- Phone/laptop and Chromecast aren't on the same Wi-Fi network (or are on different VLANs).
- 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Wi-Fi split — Chromecast on one band, your phone on the other.
- Router's mDNS / multicast traffic blocked (some "guest networks" / corporate Wi-Fi).
- Outdated Chromecast firmware or YouTube app.
- Power-saving mode on Android quietly killed background networking.
How to fix it
- 1
Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi
Check the Wi-Fi name on your phone and on the Google Home app. If they differ, switch one. Some routers expose the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands as separate networks — pick the same one for both.
- 2
Toggle Wi-Fi off + on
On both the phone and (if possible) the Chromecast. Re-establishes mDNS discovery, which is the protocol Cast uses to find your TV.
- 3
Reboot the Chromecast
Unplug power, wait 30 seconds, plug back in. Fixes most firmware-state issues that the device can't self-recover from.
- 4
Disable VPN if active
Phone VPNs frequently break Cast — the phone is on a "different network" from the LAN where Chromecast lives. Disconnect, try again, reconnect after.
- 5
Try casting from a different device
If the same video casts cleanly from a laptop but not your phone, the issue is phone-side (battery saver, VPN, OS bug) — not the Chromecast.
