YouTube app won't open — fix the launch failure

You tap the YouTube app icon and nothing happens. Or the app starts to launch, the splash screen flashes, then it crashes back to home before the main UI appears. Differs from "app keeps crashing during playback" — this is launch-time failure.

Why this happens

  • App data corruption from an interrupted update.
  • OS is below the YouTube app's current minimum version.
  • Device storage is below the threshold the app refuses to launch under.
  • Google account state corrupted at the OS level.
  • Background app refresh disabled at the OS level (iOS specific edge case).

How to fix it

  1. 1

    Restart the device

First thing to try. Resolves transient state issues that survive single app force-quits.

  2. 2

    Check device storage

Settings → Storage. If you're below ~500 MB free, many apps refuse to launch. Free up space.

  3. 3

    Clear YouTube app data (Android)

Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage → Clear Data. Note: signs you out. Re-sign in after.

  4. 4

    Reinstall (iOS / Android)

App Store / Play Store → YouTube → Uninstall → Reinstall. Account state is preserved at the Google level; local app state resets clean.

  5. 5

    Update the OS

iOS: Settings → General → Software Update. Android: Settings → System → System update. New YouTube app builds drop support for older OSes silently.

Frequently asked

Why does the YouTube app need Google Play Services to work?
Authentication, push notifications, and the in-app cast button all depend on Play Services. On Android devices without Play Services (some Huawei after 2019, custom ROMs), YouTube falls back to a partially-working web view or refuses to launch.
