YouTube wrong account — fix the multi-account confusion

You're signed into multiple Google accounts and YouTube keeps using the wrong one — showing the wrong subscriptions, recommending content for a different profile, sending notifications to the wrong inbox. The active account flip is unstable.

Why this happens

  • Browser is set to switch between Google accounts based on recent activity (not based on your explicit choice).
  • YouTube remembers a "default account for YouTube" that's different from your active Google account.
  • Cookies from multiple accounts coexist and YouTube picks the wrong one.
  • Chrome / Edge profile mismatch — you're in profile A but logged in as account B.
  • Embedded videos use a different account than the main YouTube tab.

How to fix it

  1. 1

Set the YouTube default account explicitly

Click your profile icon top-right → "Switch account" → pick the account you want. YouTube uses the most-recently-selected one for that session.

  2. 2

    Use Chrome profile separation

Create a Chrome profile per Google account. Each profile has its own cookies — no overlap, no confusion. Click your profile icon in Chrome's top-right corner → "Add" → set up.

  3. 3

Sign out of all accounts and back into one

youtube.com/logout signs you out everywhere. Sign in with only the account you want. Stable until you add another.

  4. 4

    Clear cookies for accounts.google.com

Resets the account-switching state Google uses across services. Forces a fresh sign-in flow.

Frequently asked

Can I have separate YouTube history per Google account?
Yes — each account has its own history, subscriptions, and recommendations. The trick is making sure you're signed into the right one when you watch.
