YouTube Premium not activating — fix the subscription state
You're paying for YouTube Premium but the account behaves as free — ads play, no background play, no offline downloads. The subscription is active on your bill but the YouTube app doesn't recognize it.
Why this happens
- Signed into a different Google account than the one with the subscription.
- Subscription is on a Family plan and you're not added to the family group.
- Stale entitlement cache — the subscription is valid but the device hasn't refreshed.
- Payment method failed silently — subscription is technically active but in grace period.
- Regional restriction — Premium not available in your current location.
How to fix it
- 1
Confirm the active Google account
Profile icon top-right → check the account. Multi-account users sometimes pay Premium on Account A but use Account B — entitlement doesn't transfer.
- 2
Sign out + sign back in
Forces the device to re-fetch entitlement state from Google's servers. Fixes most "subscription not recognized" cases.
- 3
Check subscription status at the source
youtube.com/paid_memberships shows your active subscriptions. If Premium isn't listed there for the account you're using, the subscription is somewhere else.
- 4
Verify Family plan membership
families.google.com → the family manager must add you. Premium Family ($23/mo for 5 people) requires explicit family-group membership.
- 5
Check the billing payment method
pay.google.com → subscriptions → YouTube Premium → verify the card on file isn't expired. Failed payments enter a 14-day grace period before disabling features.
