YouTube stuck in mini player — exit the floating window

The video is playing in the small mini-player at the bottom-right of the page but you can't get back to the full-size view. Clicking the expand icon does nothing. Or the mini-player won't close even when you're done.

Why this happens

  • The original watch page got navigated away from — mini-player has nowhere to expand back to.
  • Stuck UI state after a quality change or scrub event.
  • Browser extension hiding the expand button.
  • You're on the homepage / subscriptions feed where mini-player has no "expand" target.
  • Service worker confusion after long idle session.

How to fix it

  1. 1

    Click the mini-player title

Tapping the video title shown on the mini-player navigates back to the watch page — equivalent to "expand". Works even when the expand icon is broken.

  2. 2

Right-click → "Open in new tab"

If the mini-player has a context menu, "Open in new tab" loads the full watch page in a new tab. The mini-player closes automatically once you start watching in the new tab.

  3. 3

Close it with the X button

The mini-player has a close X (small, top-right). Closing it stops playback entirely. Reload the watch URL to start fresh.

  4. 4

Hard reload + reopen the video URL

Cmd+Shift+R the page, then paste the original video URL. Resets the player state.

Frequently asked

How do I disable YouTube mini-player permanently?
Profile icon → Settings → Playback and performance → "Mini player" → off. Disables the feature site-wide. Note: this is different from Picture-in-Picture which is browser-controlled.
