YouTube suggested videos blank — fix the empty right rail
The right sidebar (or below-video panel on mobile) where YouTube usually shows "Up next" and related videos is empty. The current video plays fine; the recommendations are missing.
Why this happens
- Browser extension blocking the recommendations API endpoint.
- Watch history paused — without watch signals the recommender has no input.
- New account or anonymous viewing with no signal to recommend from.
- YouTube's recommendations service had a brief outage in your region.
- Sidebar UI bug — recommendations were fetched but didn't render.
How to fix it
- 1
Reload the page
Fixes most UI render bugs. Recommendations get re-fetched from scratch.
- 2
Disable extensions in incognito
Extensions that block "tracker" patterns sometimes block YouTube's recommendations API. Test in incognito.
- 3
Resume Watch History
youtube.com/feed/history → Resume. Without watch history, the recommender has nothing personalized to suggest; falls back to generic trending (which can also be empty in certain regions).
- 4
Sign in if signed out
Signed-out recommendations are generic and sometimes empty. Signing in usually populates the sidebar with personalized picks.
Frequently asked
Why is my YouTube homepage empty but specific video pages work?
Homepage relies more heavily on personalization. If your watch history is paused, the homepage often falls back to generic content that's sometimes empty in your locale. Video pages have explicit recommendation sources that work even without history.
