"Add to Watch Later" not working — fix the save queue
You click "Add to Watch Later" and nothing happens — the icon doesn't fill in, the video doesn't appear in your Watch Later playlist, or the button gives a brief "success" animation but the playlist stays empty.
Why this happens
- Account is signed into a Brand Account that uses Watch Later differently from the main personal account.
- Watch Later quota hit — YouTube caps individual playlists at 5000 items.
- Cookies blocking the Save action — third-party cookie restrictions break some Save flows.
- Browser cache holds a stale state where the button has the wrong handler attached.
- YouTube's history is paused — disables Watch Later for some accounts.
How to fix it
- 1
Check Watch Later directly
youtube.com/playlist?list=WL — opens your Watch Later playlist. If the video is there, the save worked and the icon UI is stuck. If it's missing, the save failed.
- 2
Resume Watch History
youtube.com/feed/history → if Watch History is paused, Watch Later additions also fail silently for some accounts. Resume history.
- 3
Check active account
Profile icon top-right → confirm the account. Multi-account confusion is the #1 cause — you saved to the wrong account's Watch Later.
- 4
Reduce Watch Later size
If Watch Later has 5000 items, additions silently fail. Clear out old saved items.
- 5
Hard reload + clear site data
Cmd+Shift+R, then DevTools → Application → Clear site data. Resets the stuck button state.
